RENFREW – September 4, 2020 – Today, Mayor Don Eady announced the Town of Renfrew’s plan to convert 1,100 high-pressure sodium streetlights to new energy-efficient Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology. Once complete, the initiative will save the Town of Renfrew an estimated $100,000 in annual energy costs.
In addition to Town councillors, Mayor Eady was joined by John Yakabuski, MPP Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke, Mervyn Beckstead, Board Chair, Renfrew Hydro Inc., and Adnan Khokhar, Chief Energy and Infrastructure Services Officer of Envari Energy Solutions, for today’s announcement and demonstration of the new streetlighting technology.
The innovative LED streetlighting system is the product of project partner, Envari Energy Solutions, who has successfully converted a total of 55,000 streetlights for large and small municipalities like the City of Ottawa, the City of Pembroke, Beckwith Township, and the Village of Casselman.
In addition to significant energy cost savings, the new LED infrastructure has a payback period of only five years and provides additional benefits, such as:
- a 600,000 kWh reduction in energy consumption annually – equivalent to averting 50 to 65 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere or removing 77 to 97 homes from the grid;
- A reduction in annual maintenance costs; and
- Improved light-quality, colour rendition, and optical control.
Under the partnership agreement, streetlight installations began August 4, 2020, by Renfrew Hydro, and will continue over a period of five months. Residents may notice additional worksites around town while the work is being completed.
