On January 25, 2024, Envari had the privilege of attending the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) Awards Gala, celebrating the lighting community’s talent across Ottawa and Gatineau. We are thrilled to announce that Envari was honored with the “Best Green Lighting and Design Award” at the IES Ottawa Section level for its recent LED conversion along Centrum Boulevard in Orleans. This award recognizes excellence in lighting design and application in all aspects of environmentally-friendly lighting.
The project
Our award-winning project centered on the decorative streetlight LED conversion and rejuvenation along Centrum Boulevard in Orleans, Ottawa. The pre-existing system faced ongoing maintenance issues, prompting the need for a technology upgrade and overall lighting facelift. Our aim was to reduce maintenance requirements and enhance the overall aesthetic of this popular mixed-use area while achieving significant energy savings for our client.
The undertaking involved replacing 57 exterior metal halide streetlighting luminaires on 32 poles, featuring a combination of horizontal tenon-mounted pedestrian and roadway luminaires, as well as post top-mounted pedestrian luminaires. Various outputs and optical distributions were strategically employed to enhance and optimize the overall illumination of roadways and walkways.
The intent
The primary goal was to design and seamlessly integrate modern LED technology with an advanced lighting-control system and adaptive dimming, all while preserving the existing decorative aesthetic, enhancing the overall streetscape and nighttime environment, and, of course, saving energy.
The results
This project achieved an impressive 77 percent energy savings compared to the old system. Beyond savings, the outcomes included enhanced uniformity, reduced glare, improved visual acuity, minimized light trespass, and the implementation of warm color temperature luminaires.
This project serves as a testament to the effective management of complex urban infrastructure upgrades and the positive impact of sustainable technological advancements on cityscapes.

While this project may seem straightforward, integrating new technology into existing infrastructure demands experienced lighting designers and engineers to ensure a harmonious end-to-end solution. Adhering to tight timelines, project budgets, traffic control measures, design standards, and commissioning of the networked lighting control system were critical elements in delivering this successful project.
